Burst Pipe? Here's What to Do in the First 10 Minutes

A burst pipe is a race against gravity. Every minute, more water is dumping into your home — into walls, floors, and ceilings. Here's the play, in order:

Minute 1: Shut off the water main

This is the single most important step. The main shutoff valve is usually in the basement, garage, or near where the water service line enters your home. It's a wheel or lever — turn it fully clockwise to shut off. Know where this is BEFORE an emergency.

Minute 2-3: Cut power to affected areas

If water is anywhere near outlets, electrical panels, or appliances, shut off the breaker for those circuits at the panel.

Minute 4-5: Drain the system

Open the highest faucet in your house and the lowest one (basement, outdoor spigot). This lets the remaining water in the pipes drain out rather than continue leaking from the burst.

Minute 6-10: Document and contain

Then call us

Once water is shut off and you've documented the scene, call a licensed plumber. We'll repair the pipe, pressure-test to confirm no other leaks, and turn the water back on.
