Is Your Home's Water Too Hard? 6 Telltale Signs

Hard water has elevated calcium and magnesium content. It's not unsafe to drink, but it damages plumbing fixtures, appliances, and pipes over time.

The signs

1. White scale buildup on faucets and shower heads — calcium deposits
2. Soap doesn't lather well — minerals interfere with surfactants

How to test

Cheap test strips from any hardware store give you a number in grains per gallon (gpg):

• 0-3 gpg = soft
• 3-7 gpg = moderately hard
• 7-10 gpg = hard
• 10+ gpg = very hard

Solutions

• Whole-house water softener — ion exchange system, the most effective solution. $1,500-3,500 installed.
• Point-of-use filters — under-sink reverse osmosis for drinking water
• Salt-free conditioners — don't actually soften but reduce scale buildup; cheaper

Worth it?

If you're in a very hard water area, a softener pays for itself in extended appliance life and reduced soap/detergent use within 3-5 years.
